Tapioca Express

1999-03-09

This is my favorite Bo Ba place.  They have just the right amount of tea to milk to sugar ratio and I like the favor of their tea.  The one I usually go to is on Valley Blvd west of Garfield on the south side of the street in a strip mall.  There are at least 2 or 3 others.  They seem to be expanding rapidly.  They have like 90 different drinks as well as a few foods.  I haven't tried many other drinks because I'm always craving my Bo Ba fix so even though I'd like to try the others it comes down to getting my fix or trying something I usually go for the fix.

T.C.B.Y (The Country's Best Yogurt)

1999-03-09

T.C.B.Y. is a national chain of frozen yogurt / ice cream shops.  It's nothing special, at least for me, but you've got to see this.  They have something they call "Rainbow Cream".  It's vanilla ice cream with a TON OF FOOD COLORING!!!!   Of course kids love it.  I tried it and it was fine BUT, the next 3 times I when #2 I colored the water quite a dark shade of blue.

Sushi Wave

1999-03-09

Sushi Wave has the best sushi I've had in O.C.  There is often a 20 minute wait.   It's funny because the place is full of Americans instead of Japanese natives even though there are lots of Japanese natives in the area.  At least most of the employees are Japanese natives.  What makes it so good?  The fish is fresh!

Directions: From the 405 south take the 73 to the 55 south and then exit the 55 and drive down Newport Ave long the side of the freeway.  Sushi Wave is on the right in a strip mall several lights down.  If you make it to NikeTown and Triangle Square you've gone 1 or 2 lights too far.

Sushi Mon

1999-03-09

I met a Match.com date here.  Not bad, the food and the date.  A little expensive though not for L.A. sushi but they had this one dish, which was the reason to go, which is basically tuna (or was it salmon) and tomatoes and some sauce on top of a large wanton chip.  That was really good even if another friend of mine frowned at the mix of tomatoes and sushi.

Super Mex and Great Mex

1999-03-09

Some of my Japanese friends claim they don't like Mexican food.  I have to assume they've only tried Taco Bell and Del Taco.  I suppose they could actually not like it but if I had to eat only one type of food for the rest of my life I wouldn't be at all unhappy if it was Mexican food.

Soot Bull Jeep: Korean BBQ place

1999-03-09

If you are going to try Korean BBQ and you're in LA this is the place to do it.  It's dark and hot and full of smoke coming from the coals that you cook your own food on so expect your clothes to smell like Korean BBQ when you leave.

It's on 8th somewhere between Vermont and Western (3136 W. Eighth St)

Shoreline Cafe

1999-03-09

They are also open 24 hours.  At least the one in Belmont Shores is.  Their food isn't as good as Harbor house but it's usually not bad and Belmont Shores is far more interesting than the Harbor House locations.

Directions: Take the 405 north to the 7th Street exit.  On the 7th street exit there is a sub−exit to Studabaker.  Take that exit.  At Studabaker go left and then right at Westminster.  Westminster will cross PCH and become 2nd St.  Keep going until you cross two more bridges.  You're now in Belmont Shores.  The Shoreline Cafe is on right about 5 or 6 blocks.

Seoul Garden

1999-03-09

This is also a Korean BBQ.  It's much newer looking than Picnic Garden.  It's a toss up which is better.  Some people like one and some people prefer the other.   It's also $8 for lunch but drinks are separate.

Directions: From the 5 take Red Hill north.  Past the 1st light on the right is a shopping center.  It's in there behind the Del Taco.

Sanamulang Cafe

1999-03-09

Sanamulang Cafe is in the middle of Thai Town.  I didn't even know L.A. had a Thai town but it does.  I'm not sure what the boundaries of Thai Town are but Hollywood Blvd east of the 101 for a few miles seems to be the area.  Samamulang doesn't seem to be a Thai restaurant.  It's a mix of various Asian foods but it's good, and it's cheap.  Parking leaves something to be desired.  Expect to have to double park and leave your keys with some guy your not sure is actually in charge if you come at a crowed time.
