Kanpai

1999-03-09

This is also a good place for sushi though not as good as Sushi Wave.  It's great for lunch though as they have some pretty good lunch specials including gyoza and chicken and beef teriyaki for those non−sushi eaters.

Directions: Take Bristol south from the 405 to Baker.  Turn left.  Kanpai is on the left behind Shooters.  Note: Kanpai means Cheers in Japanese.

Kaitenzushi (shinjuku)

1999-03-09

I've been told that kaitenzushi (rotating sushi) is not generally the best sushi but I personally found almost every kaitenzushi place in Japan to be better than any sushi restaurant I've eaten at in the United States.  I tried several of them.  My favorites are:

Johnnies

1999-03-09

I don't know what to say about Johnnies.  I was just driving around and I saw this.  It's on Sepulevda south between the two Washingtons.  The claim famous French Dip and Pastrami sandwiches.  I tried it out and it was pretty good.  It's a small place but it looks like it either gets very crowed or used to get very crowed because there are lots of tables outside.

Johnies

1999-03-09

Not to be confused with Johnnies.  You can't eat here as it's out of business.  Instead it's rent out as a location for movies.  It's on Wilshire Blvd near the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA).  It's been in quite a few movies. Miracle Mile comes to mind

Jan's Health Bar

1999-03-09

This place used to be really hidden.  It was at the corner of Main and PCH in Huntington Beach INSIDE the surf shop on the corner.  If you didn't know it was there you probably would never notice.  But, a few years ago they moved down the street to the 500 block on Main (5 blocks back from the beach)  There's alot less foot traffic there but they say they get more business because there's accessible parking.

Anyway they have a fairly small menu.  A bunch of smoothies (and they were making smoothies long before they were popular) and they make a couple of sandwiches and soups.

Insomnia Cafe

1999-03-09

On Beverly and Poinsettia.  Another coffee shop.  The point of this one seems to be that lots of screenwriters (or wannabe screenwriters) hang out here with their laptops and type their latest screen plays or movie treatments.  I just sat there and edited my webpages.  Does that make me a poser?

Imperial Dragon

1999-03-09

This is a small Vietnamese restaurant in Costa Mesa. It's definitely not bad. I've only been for lunch. They don't have the catfish that the other place has but their soups are great as is their Charbroiled Pork with Rice and their Vietnamese eggrolls.

Directions: Take Bristol south.  It's on the right just past Paularino in the same shopping center as Video Tokyo

Hurry Curry of Tokyo

1999-03-09

If you haven't tried Japanese curry you should give it a try.  For lack of a better description, it's a plate of rice with gravy and usually some kind of meat.  Hamburger, Breaded Chicken (Chicken Katsu) and potatoes are probably the most common additions.  Unlike some other types of curry, Japanese curry is generally not very spicy.  Even if you order it spicy it usually won't come close to even a medium Mexican salsa in terms of hotness.

This is a good place to Japanese curry.  They serve the curry on the side like a bowl of gravy with a ladle so you can spoon it on yourself.
