More LCD displays

2001-11-01

There is another display show in town and they showed some of them on the news tonight. One was a color transparent luminescent display. What does that mean? Well, you've probably seen those glass LCD clocks you can buy where some kind of frame holds up what looks like clear glass except there's a digital clock display in the glass. This new display tech allows a full color luminescent display in a similar situation.

Samsung was showing a 40 inch LCD display!!!! As far as I know that's the biggest so far. Everybody has switched to the new organic EL displays as they are called which supposedly means cheaper prices and the ability to make larger displays as well as having more bright and vivid colors.

Peeing in my Pants

2001-09-29

I upgraded my computer today from a 350mhz P2 to a 1.7gig P4 and a GeForce3. It's the GeForce3 that's making me pee my pants. Oh, my GAWD!!! It comes with a few demos from NVidia to show off what the thing can do. You can check out videos of the demos here. Unfortunately you won't get the full "pee in your pants" effect from watching the videos since they are much lower resolution then the real thing so you can't see the details but seriously, we're, talking RENDER quality. Okay, maybe 1996 render quality but seriously, if you see the Zoltar demo live, except for a few problems around the edges (like for example the transition from eyelid to eyeball), this is the kind of image I'm used to seeing from most pre−rendered scenes. All his wrinkles, wiskers, blemishes etc on his skin, the embossed cloth on his robe. Jaw dropping. Here's a close up screenshot where you can see some of the details but again, live it's just amazing.

Lining up to download a file

2001-08-26

I wanted to check out a file today and was redirected to Fileplanet.com to download it. FilePlanet has this new system in place. You can pay them and then you can download files immediately or you can get in the queue to download it from one of their public servers. If you choose public a window pops up, probably using some Javascript and counts down the minutes until you get your turn to download. When I tried it it said there were 123 people in the queue and that it would be approximately 14 minutes until downloading started.

Multi-Language Chatting

I just saw the coolest thing ever!!! It was a multi−language chat system. It handled 8 languages. Now you can say "Age/Sex Check" in 8 languages simultainiously. Some students used it to collaborate on a webpage project even though they didn't speak the same languages.

Virtual PCs

2001-08-12

From Joel on Software I found out about VMWare which is software that lets you emulate several PCs running Windows 95/98/ME/2000K and/or Linux, FreeBSD etc. Check out this screenshot. There are both Windows and Linux versions. Each machine acts independantly so that for example you can configure one as a web server and another 2 or 3 as various clients and test out your net software on the same machine. Even better the software supports rollback (or hard drive undo) so you can install like Win2K once, test, click a button and have it get reset back like it was a fresh install. Pretty cool. I'd buy it except it's $300 and I don't have a $300 reason to own it at the moment.
