Insomnia Cafe

1999-03-09

On Beverly and Poinsettia.  Another coffee shop.  The point of this one seems to be that lots of screenwriters (or wannabe screenwriters) hang out here with their laptops and type their latest screen plays or movie treatments.  I just sat there and edited my webpages.  Does that make me a poser?

Hurry Curry of Tokyo

1999-03-09

If you haven't tried Japanese curry you should give it a try.  For lack of a better description, it's a plate of rice with gravy and usually some kind of meat.  Hamburger, Breaded Chicken (Chicken Katsu) and potatoes are probably the most common additions.  Unlike some other types of curry, Japanese curry is generally not very spicy.  Even if you order it spicy it usually won't come close to even a medium Mexican salsa in terms of hotness.

This is a good place to Japanese curry.  They serve the curry on the side like a bowl of gravy with a ladle so you can spoon it on yourself.

Hodori Restaurant: The 24 hour Korean place

1999-03-09

It's surprising how few 24 places there are on Los Angeles considering it is Los Angeles, one of the biggest cities int he world.  But there are a few.  This is a great one because the food is great and cheap.  It's on the Southwest corner of Vermont and Olympic.  If you go any time around dinner there will be no parking as there are like 20 shops in that strip mall and maybe only 50 spaces.

Try the Tol Suk Bi Bim Bap or the Bulgogi for starters.

Filipino place on South

1999-03-09

You're going to have to ask my friend Rose about this one.  It's good, it's authentic, but I haven't the slightest idea what to order nor do I remember exactly how to get there.  Assuming there is only one Tower Records in Cerritos you could look that up because it's in the same shopping center.  One interesting dish is called Chicken with Spoon in Ass.  Just kidding.  They have a dish that is a whole small chicken cooked a really long time so it almost falls apart when you get it.  It's delivered on a plate whole with a spoon sticking out the top which in this case is it's bottom so I decided it should be called "Chicken with Spoon in Ass" 😊

Chan Dara / Chan Darette

1999-03-09

Chan Dara is a small Thai restaurants that was introduced to me by Giant Robot magazine which described it as, the place where the waitresses look like Asian fashion models.  Of course I had to check that out and guess what, it was true.  Fortunately the food was good too.  I'm not sure if this is "authentic" but I like it.

Canters

1999-03-09

What can I tell you about Canters?  It's BIG, It's open 24 hours.  It's much better than Jerry's Deli.  It's got Jewish deli like food.  Not a bad choice for that late night dining.

California Roll Factory & Sushi

1999-03-09

I was pretty skeptical of this place but I was pleasantly surprised.  First I must mention that California Roll and most of the other rolls you see in a sushi restaurant in California are not Japanese.  You won't find a California roll in Japan nor a spider roll or a rainbow roll or a caterpillar roll or a crunch roll etc...  That doesn't really mean anything because most of those rolls can be pretty delicious.  The majority of my Japanese friends love these rolls.

Cafe 50's

1999-03-09

Ya know I really only put this here because I had a picture of it since it's between Califnornia Roll Factory and Le Saigon.  I've been here a couple of times.  Pretty standard fair for a 50's style dinner.  Burgers, fries, shakes, malts and other stuff.  They are open until 1 or 2 on Friday and Saturday nights.

On Santa Monica West of the 405 just before Barrington.
