Tommy Sushi

This place is interesting in part because it’s so hidden.  If somebody didn’t tell you it was there you’d probably think it was a closet.  The sushi’s not bad.   The dinner sets of Japanese food are large but not great.  I really like the Poki bowl which is kind of like eating a bowl of California role with some sashimi added to it.

Directions: Take the 55 to McFadden east and then turn left on to Newport Blvd.  Go Past the 5 to Bryan. Just past Bryan turn right into the parking lot of Tony’s Landing.  Tommy Sushi is behind Tony’s Landing, behind the Thai BBQ (which is also pretty good)  Don’t mistake it for the Teppan restaurant next door.

Tommy’s sushi is sooooo overated. People who don’t know sushi go there. Just look at all the white people that make up most of the clientele. The best sushi is not far. Go to 17th st in Tustin. Go to the Vons shopping Center. There is a charo chicken there.

Go to Uoko. Its the best sushi in the world and I have eaten at almost all of them! Sit with Tomo the sushi chef. He is a young Japanese surfer. He loves drinking beer with the customers.

    tommy’s sushi is so bad

I tried Tommy’s today with my husband and our ten year old son. I hate paying for bad sushi and that is exactly what happened. the crunchy roll was soggy and greasy , the spicy tuna roll bland. I can go on and on. To add insult to injury the decor reminded me of the seedy chinese food dives we used to frequent in chinatown. even our son who usually eats anthing was disgusted with his overcooked sesame chicken, cold and stringy teriyaki and salt overdosed gyoza. The food was so bad that we left most of it untouched on our plates. Next time we’ll just go to Uoko. We never go wrong eating there.

If Tommy’s Sushi is so bad then why is it packed every Friday and Saturday night? Not to mention it does pretty well during the week. And (in response to another poster) just because much of the clientele is white doesn’t mean that they don’t know anything about sushi. Tommy’s has been around for close to 20 years (so I’ve heard) and I’ve talked to someone who has been a regular almost that long. The sushi is delicious and prices are reasonable. The yellowtail is always yummy. And as for the atmosphere, I’ve been to trendy sushi bars with cool decor, but the sushi was awful and prices were double what they are at Tommy’s. So thanks, but I think I’ll keep going to my little hole in the wall sushi joint.

Tommy’s sushi is absolutely great!  They make the BEST crunchy roll I’ve ever tasted!

    Tommy’s Sushi

I doubt that any of the people here who have negative things to say about Tommy’s Sushi, especially the guy who believes that having a large “white” clientele proves his lame opinion, are able to appreciate a well rounded dining experience. If you want fancy, Tommy’s is not for you, but if you want a relaxing and hip atmostphere and a chance to eat some great food, Tommy’s is the place for you. I believe that regardless what any of us think, the continued and consistant success that Tommy’s has experienced speaks for itself. Most importantly, if the negative comments found here were actually true, do you think Tommy’s would have survived all these years?

    Great Sushi!

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the sushi at Tommy’s was still very fresh and very good. After reading the posts, I was a bit skeptical about trying the restaurant but I recalled how popular it was during my college days (almost ten years ago) so I thought I would give it another try. The service was excellent and the sushi, especially the yellowtail, salmon, and spicy tuna (and yes, they use fresh tuna for the spicy tuna rolls), was very good. The restaurant is not fancy and it may need some updating but the atmosphere is still warm and the sushi chefs are very welcoming. I would definitely recommend Tommy’s to anyone who can appreciate great sushi and warm company.
