Sick and Hating It

Don’t mind me I’m just whining but damit I hate being sick! Sunday night I came down with I guess a flu and I’ve had a tempature of up to 103f (40c) for 4 days straight. My body is often aching from head to toe and my head is throbing. 2 or 3 times I day I break out in an uncontrollable full body sweat :-( . I’ve never had anything like this but according to WebMD.com these are typical systems of the flu.

I’m not sure if this is true for everyone but when I was a kid I loved being sick. I got to stay home from school! The only part that sucked was home video games barely existed and from 1pm to 3pm there was nothing on TV except soap operas, no cable TV back then. No MTV, no Discovery or TLC or Comedy Central or Cartoon Network. No video tapes or DVDs either and no internet. Still, kids always have fun :-)

Now though I just absolutely hate being sick. :-( It feels awful, it ruins all your plans, etc. This week I was supposed to meet 2 people I will unlikely never get to meet again. One was a friend returning to Spain. Another was a new friend returning to France. I also had plans to turn in a big report that I can’t really get to in this condition.

And, although I know there are people much worse off in this aspect there are also people much better off. My friend Jason says he can’t remember the last time he was sick. My last girlfriend said she got sick only about once a year. Me on the other hand, I get sick almost without fail, 5 times a year or about once every 2.5 months and during those “well” 2.5 months there are usually 4 or 5 times where I get a small sore throat or a small cough indicating I caught something and I always pray it won’t get worse.

I know that as a kid it used to feel so unfair that there was an attendence award at elementary school for perfect attendence. I also remember this girl Shelley was one of the kids that got it every single year 7 years in a row. I felt it was unfair because it wasn’t based on merit, it was based on luck. I didn’t choose to get sick, I just got sick.

I’m curious what I can do to try to raise my immune system. I know one would be working out more although without fail, after a few weeks of working out I get sick and can’t work out for 2 to 3 weeks :-( which ends up breaking my new workout habit. (yes, an excuse :-p) A few years ago a friend suggested Echinacea. So did my mom at one point. I tried it but it seriously upset my stomach.

I know I’m sounding like a weak little guy. That’s clearly not the case. I eat everything as you can see from all the food I recommend on my site so it’s not like I’m stuck with chicken soup and plain hamburgers like a friend of mine.

But, if you have any other suggestions, especially truly medically approved suggestions I’d love to hear them.

Ever try taking a vitamin c tablet everyday? Might work!…Get the ones you can chew because they taste good. ^_^

I did that for a few years.  Ate them like candy.  But they didn’t change the frequency of my illnesses :-(   I also tried some super special multi-vitamins that were supposed to be the best :-p but I didn’t notice a change :-(  I wanted to believe :-)

    Got Fugu?

Seriously, though – maybe you need to exercise more regularly and check your diet. Your immune system needs a boost.

    Believe It …

Gregg … when I was a young mother and a young girl I used to get sick that often also.  One time when I went to the doctor, he told me perhaps I should be tested for allergies and he also suggested I watch very carefully when I began to feel any symptoms and immediately begin taking cold/allergy pills.  I did watch my symptoms and found I still got a little sick, but did not get anything full blown because I starated taking the cold/allergy pills early on.

I also decided to do the allergy testing which found I was allergic to grass, smoke, mold, feathers and dust (pretty common).  So … I took the shots for many months and have not had the recurrent illnesses but maybe once a year on a serious basis.

So … that is my story and perhaps you want to check it out with a doctor.

    Love you, M

I like your Mom’s suggestion. Sorry. I’ve had the same trouble you have for the past few years. Quit smoking 3 years ago, no change. Changed my diet to lots of whole (healthy) foods, lost 60 pounds, no change.< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Went to the allergist and found out I’m allergic to lots of stuff (mainly dust and grass/tree pollens). I’m starting allergy shots twice a week. Why? I was at my father-in-laws farm, petting the horses etc. and had a pretty bad allergic reaction. I think it’s all the dust horses carry around. Anyway, the sneezing and itchy eyes lasted a couple days then I got it. Soar throat, blocked up sinuses, and a very nasty cough. Two weeks later I’m feeling better and convinced my allergies play a huge part in this thing. Good luck on your quest for wellness!

    Marc
