Dry Cleaning is not *dry*

2002-07-07

I had wanted to know this for a while but I guess not enough to actually look into it. Then finally one day I thought, "I can probably look that up on the net." and so I did.

Basically I wanted to know what is Dry Cleaning really. It turns out the *dry* in dry cleaning only means "without water" it does not mean "without liquid". Specically dry cleaning happens with your clothes getting put in a washing machine just like at home except instead of water and soap they use things like perchlorethylene (perc) although in the past they supposedly used carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene and even gasoline and kerosene.
