Count me on the Google Autolinks is scary side

2005-03-04

If you've not been following it, Google recently released a new beta toolbar that has a new feature called Autolink. Currently it's mostly harmless but it's also very scary in its potential. If you click it it will scan the page you are reading and attempt to make any ISBN number, US Street Address, package tracking number or VIN number link to a book, map, tracking info or car info. A minor change and that feature could be used to make any word on the page link to something. Reading an article about Iraq? Click the Autolink button and every word on the page would link to other pages about Iraq, Oil, Saddam, etc..

Shaolin Soccer

2004-12-30

While I was back in LA I picked up the Shaolin Soccer DVD. I originally saw it on an HK DVD borrowed from a friend and I loved it so I wanted to show my support by buying a legit copy.

I did that but check out the cover.

Gift Card Scam

2004-12-29

My Grandmother gave me one of these for Christmas

What a scam! You can use the card like a Visa card but of course you can't get every last penny off the card unless you purchase something of the exact value. If you wanted to turn the money back into cash you'd put the card in an ATM machine and you are going to get charged again. Just to find out how much she put on the card I called their 800 number and they charged me $0.50!!! 👎

On top of which she was told I could use this in Japan. What they didn't tell her was that it would cost me to make the call to America to turn it on.

Cross Posting : Good or Evil?

2004-12-07

Recently I've been wondering if "cross posting" is good, evil or just another tool.

I guess maybe there are probably two different classifications for which the same word is used. I think it's fine if a few people want to collaborate on a site and cross post SOME of their entries. For example I post about Japan and about games and game development so if some of my entries made it on a shared site about Japan or a shared site about games that seems okay to me.

GPU Conspiracy

2004-10-13

Maybe I just have no search abilities but so far I have been unable to find any benchmarks comparing standard consumer video cards to high end FireGL video cards.

FireGL cards cost from 25% to 4−6 times more than a top end consumer graphics card. In the past, before consumer graphics cards existed these cards were amazing but now in the current market, as far as I can tell, they do nothing special. While I can read lots of opinions all over the net that believe they are faster and therefore the cost is justified I have yet to find a single one backed up by any facts.

The End of Trackback

2004-07-03

I'm really surprised it took this long but I finally heard people are receiving trackback spam. Comment spam, leaving bogus comments on people's websites advertising stuff or sites was first. It became easy to automate because lots of people are using the same software to run their website therefore write a script to spam on and you can spam all the same sites..

Oddblog Arrogance

2004-06-26

Oddpost updated their blog yesterday. Normally I've enjoyed their small company feel and seeming care about customers but this time, as I pointed out before, they did something bad. Even more frustrating is their arrogance in forcing their new software on us and claiming it's better. Not "might" be better, just better even though clearly different people will have different needs. Here's my response to them

The Problem with Standards

2004-06-21

I pushed a button with me when I read unreasoned stuff like this article Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

There's 2 ways to look at the standards issue. The one the article sees, the other is through the eyes of innovation. Should we not try to find alternative fuel sources because gasoline is the standard? Should we all be stuck with vinyl records because they were the standard instead of the new CDs and MP3s?

IE supports a zillion features that Netscape didn't (and may still not). Even if they do support them now it took them until just recently to catch up.
