Free Internet TV

2005-09-01

I noticed on the train an ad for www.gyao.jp which is free on demand net TV. I guess the idea is that they can track what you watch and show you ads. The content is streamed but it's Windows Media Player 10 DRMed so I guess that makes it harder to copy. I'm not sure how much stuff they have but other than giving them an e−mail address and age they don't ask for any personal info like name, or address.

Star Trek Medicine

2005-05-20

Amazing!  TechnologyReview.com has a few pictures of the latest medical imaging technology.  In fact some of it is actually more amazing than the displays on Star Trek.  Now if they can just make that little medical wand with the spinning top that Dr. McCoy always used that seemed to fix everything.

My First MP3 Player

2005-05-11

My latest impulse buy was to get an MP3 player.  My excuse was thinking how when I try to work out with no music I get bored and tired in minutes but when I go dancing to techno music I can dance for 3−4 hours non−stop (well, not quite but maybe 3 to 4 times for 40 minutes each with a 20 minute break).

iDog

2005-05-11

Pretty much everywhere they are selling iPods there are now Sega iDogs.  They listen to your music and shake their head and flash their colors and make sounds to the music your are listening too.  If you click the link above there is a Mini Movie of one in action in the bottom right.

It seems like dogs have been all the rage for the last couple of years with The Dog, Nintendogs and now iDogs.

GMail goes Japanese

2005-04-14

Kind of....I'm sure most people think gmail is the bomb but until today it didn't work in Japanese as it only supported Unicode. Only supporting unicode sounds like a great idea since that handles all languages but people that are not using a unicode capable email client will not be able to read your non−English mail.  While you might think that would not be common in 2005 it's actually very common in Japan.  It's the 200 million cell phones where most Japanese email happens that only support Japanese encodings.

Cell Phone Tivo

2005-04-14

Last time it was using your cell phone as a remote to program your VCR/HDD recorder.  This time the recorder is in the phone.  Sharp's newest phone, the V603sh has a TV tuner built in AND has a recording function.  It only records 3.5 minutes at a time at 320x240 and you can store about 60 minutes on a 256 meg SD card.

It's also got a motion sensor and of course all the usual stuff.
