I sometimes wish I was the type of person that loved every movie they watch. I know some people like that. But sadly that’s not me. That doesn’t mean I don’t like bad movies. There are plenty of movies that most people find awful that I love. But generally I know the movie is bad, I’m just getting something else out of it. Sometimes it’s that the movie was meant to be bad like anything from Troma. Other times it might be the genre. For example ridiculous corny dialog might be perfect for an action movie but not for a drama. Another is probably how serious the movie takes it self. An action movie like Death Race doesn’t take itself seriously where as an action movie like Terminator 4 does and therefore gets a judged in a different light.

I don’t know what the point of that last paragraph was. Ultimately I guess it is meant to say that while I like movies all over the spectrum (i.e, I’m not a movie snob) I’m still pretty picky about what movies I like.

I didn’t like Tron:Legacy at all. Here’s why

Tron:Legacy was bad on so many levels. Even though I love the original I realize it’s not the greatest movie. Sure the visuals are awesome and there are great parts but it falls a little flat at the end. Still it beats Tron:Legacy by miles.

What’s wrong with Tron:Legacy? How about?

Writing:
The writing is atrocious. For example:

We are told ISOs will save the human world? Why?

This entire topic is unexplained. <spoiler mode=”not so much though”> It’s sole point seems to be to make Quorra more special as the last ISO and yet we never learn why that matters. </spoiler>

Sam is a super hero? Why?

In the original, Kevin Flynn both created the main videos games and is clearly an expert at them. Once inside the computer he excels at the Light Cycles game which makes sense as it’s less physically demanding and probably uses the same skills he had from outside the game. But that’s the only game he really plays. Flynn plays one Jai alai like game where he barely survives and is playing against a very unfit unskilled opponent. He never plays the disc based games that require tons of physical skill. Only Tron does that who was arguably programmed for it.

In the sequel, Sam Flynn shows no real experience with video games but once inside he is suddenly master of the most physically demanding and skill requiring games there are. WTF?

Zeus sucked.

The whole scene with Zeus was clearly inspired by the Merovingian from the Matrix but this scene completely doesn’t work. Instead of an eccentric character we get just silly overacting and that is ultimately not interesting in any way. The Merovingian at least had somethings of value. Zeus had nothing.

Hippy/New Age Dialog was out of place.

During the movie Kevin Flynn, the father, has several very hippy / new age sounding lines. As far as could tell those were put in because they reflect Jeff Bridges’ look. They don’t fit the character of Kevin Flynn at all though. He was a computer hacker, not a hippy.

Editing:

Compare the lightcycle battle in the original to the one in the sequel. If you can divorce yourself from the effects it should be very clear there is lots of tension and a strong feeling of speed in the original. The editing is tight. The speed is hyper. Then watch the lightcycle battle in the sequel. It’s boring by comparison. No tension, no sense of speed. That doesn’t even take into account that one of the things that made the original interesting is the 90 degree turns, something that can happen in a computer but not in the real world. That’s the whole point of Tron, that inside the computer things are different. The rules of the outside world do not apply.

This same editing style is brought to the lightplane battle at the end which looks more like a sky ballet than a battle in cyberspace. They way the lightplanes fly they might has well been real world bi-planes. It’s slow and boring instead of tense and exciting. Such a huge opportunity was missed here to do something as creative as the original was with lightcycles.

Continuity:

This one they just got plain wrong. You don’t escape the computer world by standing in a beam of light and holding the disc above your head. That’s how you communicate with your user. Did no one bring this up during production? Was the entire staff asleep or just not paying attention?

Style:

The sequel benefits from the advances in computer graphics but sadly it was all wasted. The style and designs in the original were far more interesting than the styles in the sequel. Of course that’s subjective so lets try something a little less subjective. In the original everything in the computer is different from the outside world. In the sequel there’s a nearly real world looking night club. In the sequel we have living rooms full of real world stuff. Real world looking food on a real world looking table with real world looking utensils. All of these distract from what made Tron special. Sure you can come up with various reasons why those things might exist inside the computer. That’s not the point. The point is, the whole premise is about how inside the computer is DIFFERENT. Everything that makes it more like the real world makes it less interesting.

Conclusion:

The sad part of it is Tron was a great premise and with the power of today’s computer graphics in the hand of an inspired team could have been one of the most amazing movies experiences since the Matrix. Instead it’s a pretty tame forgettable movie which has not only failed to live up to the original but spoiled the franchise forever.

Here’s hoping someone, someday will come out with a cyberspace movie that really lives up to the potential of the topic.

Recently I got into watching a bunch of old movies. I think probably because there haven’t really been any current movies I wanted to see. So I checked the IMDB top 250 and picked a few oldies thinking if they are still popular this many years later maybe they are worth checking out.

Here are my impressions. Maybe you’ll find something to check out yourself. I’m sure if you already seen them some of you will disagree with my opinions. I’d love to hear your insights.

12 Angry Men

This one started off a little preachy I thought. Maybe that was my own biases but after about 10 minutes it settled into a groove and was great all the way through. The story is about a jury. They’ve just watched a murder trial and the movie takes place in the jury room as they attempt to decide on a verdict.

Recommended!

The Conversation

It’s a about a kind if private detective or private spy who is very good at his work. He’s hired to covertly record the conversations of a man and women walking around in a public space. All that happens at the very beginning of the movie. As he uses his eqiupment to piece together the conversation he thinks the people he recorded may have their lives in danger and he’s worried if he turns over the recording he might be helping whoever has it out for them.

I enjoyed the experience of watching it because it’s such a different kind of movie. It was a little slow though.

The Apartment

I thought this movie was just so so but Shirley McLane was a hottie!

It’s about a guy working at a giant generic corporation right out of 1984 or Brazil where somehow the main character played by Jack Lemon has found himself loaning his apartment out to his various bosses for them to meet their mistresses.

What I found most interesting I think was this is a 1960s movie and yet it is arguably so straight about sex. Sure they never show it but at the same time all these bosses are bringing their mistresses over to the main character’s apartment for sex. The neighbors complain about all the noise and appearently are not aware it’s all different people so they all think Jack Lemon has a different sex partner every day, sometimes more than one a day.

Bridge over the River Kwai

This was a great movie. It’s a David Lean movie which means the bigger the screen the better. In fact if you can see it at a movie theater at some special showing that would be best.

It’s about a group of Britsh soliders that are prisoners of war and forced to build a bridge by their Japanese captors. Being Daivd Lean it’s also a LONG movie but it was great all the way through so I didn’t feel the 2 hours and 42 minutes.

Some people probably think the movie is racist since the Japanese General is portrayed as not so smart a leader and the British Colonel wants to show the Japanese how much smarter the British are. But, there are dilbert like bosses in all cultures "The Japanese General" and there are people who make kind of racist statements in all cultures "The British Colonel" so arguably while the Colonel says something to the effect of "let’s show the Japanese our superior British abilities" that doesn’t make the movie racist, only that particular character. And even then, if it was two football teams and the coach of the teamA said let’s show teamB how superior we are that wouldn’t be racist either. In this case the teams are the British and the Japanese.

It also has the very famous song the soliders whistle. It’s great to find the origin of songs that have become this ubiqutous.

When it was over I felt compelled to look up if any of it was true. Apparently there really was a Britsh troop forced to make a bridge over the river Kwai and part of it is still standing. The rest of the details though are apparently made up. It doesn’t matter though, it’s a great story.

Doctor Zhivago

It’s been like 25 or 30 years since I told myself to watch this movie and I only got around to it now. I don’t remember how old I was but I remember when I was a kid asking my Mom what her favorite movie was and she said “Doctor Zhivago” and ever since I thought I should check it out. But, being another David Lean movie it’s 3 hours and 20 minutes long and every time I thought about watching I was like…ugh, 3+ hours? maybe some other time. Well, I guess I finally found that *other* time :-p

To be honest I just didn’t get it. In fact I didn’t enjoy it so much I’d almost call it bad.

The Good Parts: The Russian history. It takes place during the Russian revolution. Maybe this is the part that gets to people closer to that time. I don’t know how accurate the movie is but that part was interesting.

Another part I enjoyed was the contrast of 17 year old girl in the 1940s compared to a 17 year old American girl of 2006. Of course it’s a movie but if 17 years olds used to actually act that mature it’s no wonder getting married much earlier was not considered unusual.

The Music. I’m not sure if it was famous before this movie or not but I’m sure this movie helped make it a very common song.

The Bad Parts: Or, why I didn’t like it.

[spoilers]

Basically I didn’t get it. The movie starts with Lara, who is basically raped by some old man but then apparently falls for him or at least keeps a relationship with him. Separarely Doctor Zhivago is well to do and marries a well to do wife. Some years later during WW2 Doctor Zhivago is sent to the war and Lara ends up as a nurse at the hospital he works at. In like 20 seconds of the movie 6 months pass, the war is over and the Doctor and Lara go their separate ways. No suggestion that they are interested in each other or that they had anything more than a plutonic relationship is suggested.

Doctor Zhivago gets back home after the revolution to find that all his wealth and even is home our now property of the state. He has no status and the locals hate him because he was well to do at one time so he leaves with his wife and son. They end up in some town in the middle of nowhere hoping they can live happily. Just
by chance Lara happens to live in the same town. He comes up to her place and in moments they are ripping each other’s clothes off. Up until this point at no time has it been suggested he’s interested in Lara or she in him. All we know is her life sucks ass and he has a wife and kid it seems like he loves.

My guess is the director thought the woman that plays Lara is so beautiful that everyone would just get that any man would want her. Otherwise none of it explained and you just have to except that they hit it off even though it’s never shown.

The ending was weak as well. There’s a wrapper story. A solviet solider finds a worker in a dam and thinks she might be the daughter of Zhivago and Lara. He tells their story (the movie) and after it’s finished he asks the girl if she might be their daughter. But, it doesn’t matter one wit so what’s the point. This girl will not be saved, or inherit something or come to some long lost understanding or resolve some emotional issue. Nothing. In fact she walks off like it’s nothing. I guess it was all for the General but bah, it didn’t work.

[end-spoilers]

Lots of people seem to find this movie romantic. I didn’t find one single thing about it even remotely romantic. I can only guess people maybe find the two main characters, Lara and Docter Zhivago attractive so they want good things for them. Otherwise, where were the romantic parts? I must have missed them.

Sunset Blvd

This movie is basically out of date. I suppose at the time it was interesting but it just doesn’t really work anymore. Maybe there have been too many movies that use similar themes.

It’s about a crazy old silent movie star who is the stereotype of the spoiled, always have to get their way, star that is desparate for attention.

Maybe back then that kind of thing was more common. Certainly stars were more revered back then. Sure there are fans today but it’s nothing like it was back then and that’s probably why it doesn’t work for me

Harvey

This movie rocked! If you havent’t see it it’s probably the best movie on this list.

On top of it just being interesting, at least for me the acting was incredible. Most of the people in the story ignore each other and start talking before the previous person is finished. I found that amazing because most dialog is one person talking then one person responding, back and forth. This movie though since they are not responding directly to each other it had to be way harder to keep their lines up. Maybe that’s getting too technical. I did find it frustrating that no one was listening but that didn’t stop it from being a great movie. It works more like a play than a movie which probably contributes to its timelessness.

Path to Glory

I had never even heard of this movie but it was on the list and sounded interesting so I thought I’d check it out.

It’s about the French Army in WW1 and some generals who give no thought for the soldiers, almost like they are live stock.

It’s only 80 minutes and it’s pretty intense all the way through. It’s also directed by Stanly Kubrick if that helps you decide to check it out. Fully recommended.

The Maltese Falcon

Here’s another very famous very well loved movie that I didn’t get. I think maybe I was just too slow. A million things happen, the movie jumps all over introducing new characters left and right often just in dialog. I was lost. I couldn’t tell what was really going on. Maybe I should try it again in 5 or 10 years but for now it didn’t work for me.

North by Northwest

I haven’t seen that many Hitchcock movies so if they are all this good I’m probably in for a treat. I guess you might call this a suspence movie. It was pretty intense all the way through and mostly kept me guessing. I thought the last 10 minutes were a little cheesy and cliche but they didn’t ruin the movie. Recommended

The Third Man

Kind of intersting. The best part is the historical part. It takes place in Vienna after WW2 with the city split into 4 districts run by 4 different countries. The main character shows up for a job from a friend and when he arrives he finds out his friend is dead from a car accident. Some guy who saw the accident mentions he saw 3 people dealing with the body just after the accident but only 2 can be indentified so most of the movie is about the main character trying to find out who this thrid man is and maybe find out if his friend was murdered.

Another part I thought was well done is showing a foreigner deal with getting by in a city where he doesn’t speak most of the languages being used. Maybe my memory is failing me but I don’t remember any other movie really doing this part well. Most of the time the movie is all in one language, if there is a foreign group they quickly switch to English for dialog. Some people brought up Lost In Translation but to be honest I found that kind of fake.

The music is extremely famous and it was great to know where it came from and to hear the original version which is the best IMO but, overall I didn’t find this an amazing movie worthy of top 250 status. It was just kind of okay.

This is probably the newest one on my list of old movies. For some reason I never saw Deliverance. It’s pretty intense and fairly disturbing. I don’t know what the closest current movie is. Probably The Descent.

Deliverance is about 4 guys who set off to ride some canoes down a river in the south for fun, similar t
o the way in The Descent a bunch of women decide to go cave exploring. Then everything goes wrong. Deliverance stays in the real world where as the Descent has it’s fictionalized creatures. I think that makes Deliverance not necessarily better but still more disturbing.

On The Waterfront

This movie, possibly even more than Sunset Blvd is dated. It was clearly written in a time where the majority of the people watching it were expected to be devout believing Christians. The movie is about a young guy who gets sucked into a mob like gang. There are parts where the preacher is trying to convince people to do stuff because it’s the right thing to do and Jesus is watching them but that kind of talk would never work now a days. (did it even then?)

[spoilers]

Plus, at the end the big deal is the main character has a fight with the mob boss. After losing the fight we are supposed to believe that if he manages to get up and walk into his work area, against the will of the mob boss, that everything will be fine. That no one will listen to the mob boss anymore having been stood up to once and he’ll just slink out of their lives. But of course in the real world the mob boss would just kill the guy and then threaten everyone else with more of the same unless they obeyed. So, I just couldn’t get into this movie.

The Treasure of Sierra Madre

This kind of story has been done several times in the last 10 or 15 years. In a very simple way it’s about people that come into a lot of money and how they change. I really liked this one though. There were lots of things I learned in this movie. Apparently what digging for gold is really like. How hard it was to do, especially out in the middle of nowhere.

While I was matching this movie I couldn’t imagine how they shot most of it back when it was made. It must have been hell to go into the places the show and shoot film.

Recommended

I’m not sure what’s next. If you have any recommendations I’d love to hear them.

I’ve been looking for one of these animations since I was a kid with little hope of finding it. I caught part of one on the Disney Channel a few years ago just buy luck on video once but of course I couldn’t get the VCR started quick enough so I only got the last 1/2 and even then they were only showing part of the original.

Then about a month ago I stumbled on something, I already forgot what, that talked about Dr Werner von Braun working with Walt Disney on videos about space travel so I googled for von Braun and Disney and found out not only had they released a DVD with the animation I was looking for but IT WAS ALREADY OUT OF PRINT! Fortunately there were some for sale from 3rd parties. I got my copy today!

The specific animation is called “Mars and Beyond” but in general the animations in the whole series totally inspired me as a kid. Watching them again makes me just as excited for the future as I was back then. There’s something about just hearing the voice of the narrator, Dick Tufeld. He was the narrator for nearly all of Disney’s projects back then including things like the Adventure thru Inner Space ride so his voice was the voice of the future and the voice of science and technology for most of my childhood.

One disappointment was I assumed another animation I was seeking would be included and it’s not. The animation shows Disney’s ideas for the future which you’d think would be included in a collection called “Tomorrowland”. The animation I’m looking for was all about the future and showed things like computer controlled cars that looked like a glass encased living room. You’d program in a destination then play games or watch TV with your family while the car drove itself to your destination. Another was an atomic powered tunnel maker that melted through a mountain like butter. Toward the end of the segment they showed freeways going through the arctic and under the ocean. They used to show parts of this animation on the Rocket Rods ride at Disneyland. If you know where I can find a copy please tell me.

I saw the Butterfly Effect on video recently. I had heard good things about it so I was looking foreward to it. I wasn’t bad but it wasn’t worthy of recommendation IMO.

Things I find unbelievable in movies or inconsistant generally distract me out of the movie so here’s a few of the problems I had with the Butterfly Effect

** SPOILERS **

(*) The biggest disappointment for me was the scene where he goes back in time to save the mom and baby from dying from the exploding mailbox. Clearly he was in control of himself. He already had experience with this time-travel like condition so there no excuse of being disoriented and yet completely out of character like a dumbass he walks right into the explosion. That made absolutely no sense and was clearly written just to for the consequences later.

(*) The scene where Lenny kills Tommy also seemed out of sink to me and while I could buy it, they never explained why he couldn’t just go back to that same point in time and replay it. Clearly all he needed to do was go back, not give Lenny a sharp object and say what he said to Tommy again to get him to stop. Same with the scene above. Go back, don’t walk like a dumbass straight into the explosion. Still, I’ll except that idea that he can only go back once to each location. That absolves this issue but not the one above.

(*) The scene where he goes back to elemetry school and punctures his hands. The inconsistancy is that THE FRIGGEN MOVIE IS CALLED THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. That means by the title of the movie a small change in anything should have a big effect on the future. Having changed the past in that scene he would no longer be standing in the prison since by “the Butterfly Effect” the effects would have propgated. He would have had to go to the hospital or at least the nurse changing his whole day back then, changing the reaction of his mom, changing how serious she would take the murder drawing, etc. etc.

Even more inconsistant through, in the “new” world, the world with his hands having scars, everyone would know him is the guy with scars on his hands. The cellmate would not have noticed the change. Coming back from his hand puncturing episode the cellmate would be like “ah, you’ve always had those scars, what’s your point?”.

(*) The final scene. Having established that he can only go back to times where he blanked out in childhood we have to except that somehow he had a blankout episode as a baby in the womb. In fact, in all other scenes he is only able to go back based on his memories but we are supposed to accept that he has memories of being in the womb? Yea, I know babies do remember stuff in the womb but they are not concrete memories enough to visualize actually being there of the kind he required in every other scene.

(*) If you haven’t seen Donnie Darko stop reading, more spoilers follow.

While the two movies are not THAT similar they do share a common resolution. In both movies the characters figure out that their death eariler in their life would have been best for everyone involved.

Donnie Darko is a slow creepy movie. It doesn’t have any real time travel etc but it also has a more arguable resolution. It’s only 30 days worth of effects he’s considering and we can except that his death at the beginning of those 30 days prevents many of the bad events that happen during those 30 days.

In Donnie Darko you can even assume that he has not choice, the 30 days of experiences is just for him to come to terms with his death.

With the Butterfly Effect though, it’s 20 years of effects. We don’t know his death would have really fixed anything. Although we are told they do he doesn’t get to know that, remember he only gets the new memories AFTER he gets back from an episode. As far as he gets to know because he wasn’t born mom gets massively depressed from a 3rd stillborn baby and commits suicide, Tommy and Kayleigh’s Mom’s new husband is child abuser, etc. etc. The point is, there is no way for him to know his death as a baby would actually have a positive outcome and if like in every other case he was wrong and it actually caused more problems, in this one case, he can’t go back and try to fix them again.

Something that seems semi based in reality instead of something based in magic or religion although any intelligent horror movie would be great.

…(spoilers)…

Dawn of the Dead I’m sure is entertaining but the older you get the less you can excuse all the BS about don’t kill that guy, he’s bit but you just can kill him and all the other BS like saving the dog, splitting up when their’s no need, driving like madmen just as an excuse to have a car flip, etc, etc, etc. Even things that are not techincally wrong but are still fairly unbelievable like a gun master not being able to take care of a zombie or two coming through a dog door that he is prepared for.

…(end spoilers)…

Another would be without all the irrational people. Yea, I know, people are irrational but still, it’s so cliched it’s boring. I’m sick of the only reason anyone dying is because some character is too stupid or too “compassionate”.

Lots of people say, “with out all that kind of stuff the movie wouldn’t be interesting” to which I say BS. The movie would be 1000 times more interesting if it had flawless logic because it would actually be different from 99.99% of all the other horror crap.

I can’t think of any off the top of my head except maybe Aliens.

I’ve been renting quite a few movies lately being stuck at home with a cold. I recently rented “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” which I was told was pretty bad but I was in the mood for a popcorn movie. Anyway, it wasn’t quite as bad as I was lead to believe, probably because I watched with the right attitude but it did raise a few questions.

One was “Who was Dorian Gray”. I looked that up and found the book although I’m not sure if I’m interested enough to actually read it. It sounds very interesting though. The other was, what was Captain Nemo really like. I have not read that book and like many my only points of reference come from the Disney movie.

So, I went to go look it up on Amazon.com but then I realized it’s a friggen old book and should be public domain by now. I searched for it and found it here. Amazon sells a PDF version for $4.95. Why would I want that I’m not sure. I can see paying for a printed version since it’s still easier to read on paper.

But that’s not the interesting part. The interesting part is someone went to the trouble to make a computer reading of it here. I’m not sure I could take that type of speech for too long but there are people working on systems that sound more natural.

I went to see Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse with a bunch of friends last night. Apparently only I enjoyed it. I’m guessing I just went in with the right attitude. I knew exactly what I was going to get. A stupid action horror movie with lots of plot holes but because of my expectations I was able to let it slide and just enjoy it.

I also enjoyed the first one. It too was a stupid horror movie but it was the best movie based on a video game to date, not that that is saying much but still, I came out more entertained than I expected to be.

SPOILER WARNING:

I actually felt like it was fairly creative. There were several cool action sequences like the motorcycle one and the one where she runs down the side of the building.

In fact, I guess that makes it less a horror movie and more an action movie but the main character basically being able to kick so much ass in a horror movie seemed original to me and I liked the way it played out.

Of course in general I don’t like coincidence in movies and this one had way too many, for example. Why did Alice know to come into the Church? And even if she did how did she happen to come in at exactly the right time? Still, that scene rocked.

Why did she appear at exactly the right time for the dog scene and wasn’t it a little too convenient that there happened to be a fire proof blanket exactly where she needed it to be.

How did her friends happen to come pick her up at exaclty the right time at the end of the movie?

All those could be extreme luck so even though they are examples of poor writing the worst was the zombies in the cemetary. They didn’t fit with the consistency of the world of the movie. How do fleshless bones come back to life from the T-Virus? They don’t.

There was surprisingly little CG in the movie. That was both good and bad. It was good because for some reason it seemed to me they had to be more creative in thinking of how to make this type of movie without the budget for lots of CG. On the other hand, all the fighting is lots of super fast cuts which is basically an excuse for not being able to actually do the moves. Most current action movies just seem to use lots of CG for those parts. Spiderman 2, DareDevil and Catwoman for example all use CG fight scenes.

but don’t let all those things stop you from seeing it. Just go in knowing what to expect. If you liked the first one I think you’ll like this one as well.

Cutie Honey the movie RULES!.

I went to see Cutie Honey today as a friend had recommended it. I went with no expectations and was totally blown away. One of the best Japanese live action comedy movies I’ve ever seen.

Cutie Honey is a very famous Japanese Anime character from quite a while back. I believe a few animated movies based on her have made it to the states but not much of the original series.

The movie is made for adults who used to watch the show as a kid, not for kids, and the first 10 minutes of the movie are probably some of the most entertaining stuff I’ve seen in a long time. Of course the movie is total camp and its energy is not consistant throughout but if you love fun campy movies and you aren’t put off by girls in bikinis then I can give it the best recommendation I know how which is that I would happily go pay another 1800 yen to see it again

It’s made by the same director as “Red Shadow” which is also made in the same vain. Red Shadow was a disappointment though, probably because the setting was too serious for a comedy. The basic premise of Cutie Honey is itself completely silly so going for total over the top camp really fit this time.

GO SEE IT! (y)
